Intro to Mockingbird/characterization

Students received their work packets for reading Part 1 of the novel today. 4th and 6th periods still had a few presentations to give, and we all looked at why anyone and everyone should read To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM). We worked on a packet for determining direct and indirect characterization, and students were assigned to finish the practice activities tonight. Only 3rd hour got a start on reading the book, and we stopped on pg 6 (of my edition).

Characterization/read TKAM

After reviewing the direct/indirect characterization activity, we started/continued to read ch 1. 3rd hour finished the chapter, 4th hour stopped at pg 8, and 6th hour stopped at pg 10. Students were assigned to complete characterization notes on Calpurnia and Dill (and Boo Radley for 3rd hour). DUE TOMORROW.

Setting/finish ch 1

All classes finished reading ch 1 of TKAM today and I reviewed the guidelines for their notes chart on setting (in their work packets). Students had some time at the end of class to start their setting notes page and/or to add to their character notes, which should include Calpurnia, Dill, and Boo Radley. I will be collecting their character and setting notes on Friday, so this is something students should be working on DAILY.

Reading/work on character chart

We stopped reading in the middle of chapter 3 - right after Burris Ewell leaves. Students are to work on adding notes on the following characters: Scout (use S.T.E.A.L./indirect characterization), Dill, Calpurnia, Miss Caroline, Walter Cunningham, Boo Radley and Burris Ewell. I will be collecting their character and setting notes tomorrow.

Eng of 3rd Quarter

We finished reading ch 4 of To Kill a Mockingbird and in some classes students had time to work on the character and setting charts, due after spring break. They turned in their unused hall passes for extra credit.

State-wide school closure starting today

Per Governor Ducey's orders, all K-12 classes have been canceled across the state of Arizona through Friday, March 27th. This is all the information we have for now. Please check back for updates. Students who wish to remain active in reading To Kill a Mockingbird, I have added reading comprehension questions for chs 5-11. THESE ARE NOT REQUIRED, but if you want to continue reading, it would be in your best interest to have these handy so you can remember what you've read.

Hello all,
I've added a couple activities to take you beyond the simple reading and answering questions you've been engaged with for the first 11 chapters. Now, in addition to continuing to read and answer the reading questions, I'd like you to complete all the newest activities I've uploaded, including the Coronavirus Journal Activity. You can find the new activties in Honors 9 class resources. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
