Poetry Foundations

After we finished the formatting part for the Allusion workshop, students completed their assignment and turned them in. Using the packet for this foundational unit, we looked at stanza structures today. For homework, students were assigned to complete the practice analysis activity on Stanza Structure with the poems "Suicide in the Trenches," "Acquainted with the Night," and "Anthem for Doomed Youth." This section is due, completed, at the beginning of class tomorrow.

We continued working our way through the packet, today leaving off at line structure. Homework: on a separate piece of paper, write responses to the 5 questions for the poem "Grass." We'll workshop them in class tomorrow.

We worked our way through poetic sound effects in the packet today. Homework: annotate and explain how each of the figurative language examples in the packet operate as the examples.

Finishing up poetry foundations

Students are on the last activity in their packet - figurative language. We'll review this Monday and move on.

Figurative language and meter/rhythm

We finished the last of the poetry elements packet and started work on meter and rhythm. I assigned the students to complete the practice activity on syllables, feet, and meter for homework.

Organizing materials/"Helen"

After reviewing the class requirements and specific organizing method for honors English, we finally looked at an application for our poetry foundations: two poems about Helen of Troy. Homework: use the accompanying discussion questions as guidelines to the annotating

Students worked with partners for assigned questions # 2-9 on the two Helen of Troy poems. We'll continue tomorrow.

Almost finished w/ Helen poems

We will work together to discuss Q #10 on Monday. Weekend homework: Complete the "Jenny Kissed Me" activity all the way through, especially #s 5-6 with your own poem for the oral interp next week.

World Poetry Project assigned

After giving students some time in class to practice their poems for the oral interpretation tomorrow, we reviewed the components of their world poetry project. TONIGHT: Practice practice practice your oral interpretations!!

Find 5 world poems

After students completed their oral interpretations, they started work on choosing five poems for their poetry project. Review poems/start reading about authors

Because students are responsible for a literary biography as part of this project, I encouraged them to start reading up on the authors of their chosen poems.

After the PFM, students had about 15 minutes to start reading about the various poets. We'll continue tomorrow. Also, I collected the tone activity (based on the "Jenny Kissed Me" activity).

Start poetry project components

Today I reviewed the requirements and model for writing a personal response (2c in packet). This poem is the one from the poet students are writing the biography for. Students should also be compiling biographies of the poet. No less than two sources, no more than 3. The personal response on the poem is due Tuesday for a completion grade.
